A while back, I began to think about starting a non-profit. I wanted to contribute and give back to my community in a meaningful way. I knew I wanted to start a non-profit, but I didn't know what subject I wanted to focus on. As I sat and brainstormed, I thought of the hours I spent volunteering at my local food bank; I then realized I wanted to help address food insecurity in my community.

Did you know that almost 20% of people in the Sacramento area live under the poverty line? That's one in every five people who need assistance from local food banks. When I first discovered this, I was shocked, and I immediately new I had to do something about it.

As I was starting my non-profit, I knew Kare4All needed to have a central message. With some input from others, I decided on the main message of "respect, dignity, and access to food for all." The people that we are servicing shouldn't feel uncomfortable for needing help from their community. Everyone of our customers is to be given the upmost respect.

After solidifying a central message, I started writing a list of all the tasks I needed to accomplish such as making a website, creating a logo, contacting a food bank, ordering bags, creating an elevator pitch, etc. Each day I had a new focal point. Eventually, I was able to have a meeting with the food bank that I originally volunteered at, and we discussed a partnership. After the meeting, I was very excited to be able to work with such a great group of people.

Starting Kare4all was my way of giving back back to my community. What's yours?
